The origin of the Haldane gapped phase

  • We present a comprehensive review of the history and physical consequences of the Haldane conjecture proposed with regard to quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains. In particular, we focus on the various related historic developments, and show that the study of the Haldane gapped phase has opened up a new research field in condensed matter physics—symmetry protected topological phases.
