Abstract
Professor Serge Haroche and Professor David J. Wineland have been awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics. They have independently invented and developed ground-breaking experimental methods for measuring and manipulating individual quantum systems while preserving their quantum-mechanical nature. Their work demonstrates very fundamental behaviour of quantum systems under full control, and underpins quantum technologies relevant to quantum information and atomic clocks.
