Abstract
The career of Henry G. J. Moseley is outlined. The process by which he found the relationship between the atomic number and the frequency of radiation, and his research on X-rays are recounted. Moseley concluded that the atomic number is the essential characteristic of the element. His great contribution left a profound mark in the history of atomic physics.
