The microstructure of liquid water

The origin of water anomalies continues to baffle scientists. Recently, studies have focused on the local structure and its impact on the anomalies of liquid water. We review the recent progress in this field, and in particular, discuss the hydrogen bonds in liquid water and its relationship with the structure. By using a simplified water model, the water anomalies due to the orientation and strong-weak duality of the hydrogen bonds are explored.
