  • Flexoelectric effects in nematic liquid crystals were first studied by Meyer in 1969, but his theory only attracted attention thirty years later. Early studies of flexoelectric effects are reviewed, and recent developments summarized. The basic problems, status quo and current points of interest are discussed.
