The discovery of solid state cathodoluminescence

A novel form of luminescence, solid state cathodoluminescence (SSCL) was discovered when certain organic materials were employed as the active layer in an optimally designed scheme. In this paper we recount the history of the discovery of SSCL, identification of the experimental phenomena, investigation of its universal characteristics, and its potential development.
