Twisting induced by bending of multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract
We present recent molecular dynamics simulations for bending of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The rippling caused by the buckling is described at the atomistic level. It is demonstrated that such nanotubes exhibit nonlinear mechanical responses when subjected to bending deformations. Notably, a twisting mode arising from curvature-induced lattice mismatch emerges with the rippling in the bent nanotubes.
