Semiconductor heterostructure photodetectors

Photodetectors are optoelectronic devices that detect light and turn it to electrical signals. The device structure and operation principle of PIN photodiodes, avalanche photodiode and semiconductor-metal-semiconductor MSM photodiodes are described. Their responsivity, noise and bandwidth are also discussed. These devices have been widely used in many optoelectronic systems in optical fiber communications, optical processing etc.
