Laboratory studies of astrophysical opacity

Intense lasers are now being used to recreate an extreme physical environment in the laboratory which is very close to conditions inside stars, allowing the creation of experimental test beds where astrophysical observations and models can be quantitatively compared with laboratory data. A deeper understanding of stellar opacity can thus be obtained by means of experiments.
