Continuing the thread in exploring the nature of matter:thirty years of collider experiments in the Department of Physics,Tsinghua University

  • The high-energy collider experiments in the Department of Physics, Tsinghua University, have experienced a thirty-year journey marked by both progress and interruptions. The endeavor began with initial explorations at the turn of the century, was temporarily suspended due to personnel changes, resumed in 2014 when the department formally joined the A Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS) experiment, and expanded further in 2019 with successful addition of two new directions—the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) and Forward Search Experiment (FASER). Today, the department maintains a synergistic research framework across these three Large Hadron Collider frontier experiments, and has produced a series of original results, including precise measurements of the Higgs boson properties and its coupling to fermions, the discovery and quantum number determination of fully charmed tetraquark states, and the first direct detection of high energy neutrinos in a collider. Tracing this developmental timeline, this article reviews the academic heritage and innovative trajectory of experimental collider research in the Department of Physics, Tsinghua University.
