    Abstract: The background and history of dye-sensitized solar cells is reviewed, with details of the structure and principle of cells based on nanoporous TiO2 semiconductor films. Recent experimental and technological advances in the fabrication of the key components are discussed in detail. Future developments, industrialization prospects and potential applications are also discussed.
